OpenFlow is an emerging technology aimed at providing new functionality, control and choice to network administrators.  It is designed as an open interface for remotely controlling the forwarding tables in network switches, routers and access points to enable a switch from monolithic devices to controller based systems.  Happening at Interop, the InteropNet OpenFlow Lab plans to educate attendees on the principles, functions and features of OpenFlow, and demonstrate OpenFlow in different scenarios.  Jed Daniels, Director of Product Development at OPNET Technologies is leading the InteropNet OpenFlow Lab.

"With an effort to bring OpenFlow to the commercial realm, Interop presents attendees with the unique opportunity to explore this new technology as part of the InteropNet program," said Lenny Heymann, Interop General Manager.  "Interop is a platform for showcasing technology developments and driving the future of IT.  Anyone running an enterprise network will want to become familiar with this technology in order to drive efficiencies in the network."

During Interop, network experts working on the OpenFlow standard, will use OpenFlow to demonstrate:

  • How to extend a single management domain across a physical and virtual switch infrastructure made up of devices from a variety of vendors
  • How to provide unique load balancing functionality
  • How to create an intelligent network based QOS for VoIP in a converged network

As part of Interop's commitment to interoperability, InteropNet Lab is a multi-vendor, test and implementation area for emerging technologies, like OpenFlow.  The intention of the InteropNet Lab is to raise awareness of concepts that will affect the future design and implementation of enterprise networks. The InteropNet Lab is vendor neutral, built in collaboration with a cross-section of the business technology industry.  For more information contact Glenn Evans, Lead Engineer of InteropNet at gevans@interop.net.
