EE Times Group Announces the ARM Technology Conference Technical Program

The ARM Technology Conference will include over 60 classes and tutorials covering the latest trends, design strategies and tools, providing in depth knowledge about achieving the highest level of market differentiation in ARM technology-based products.  

The annual ARM Technology Conference attracts the technology elite, system developers employing the ARM architecture, chip teams working with ARM silicon IP and tools, and the entire ARM Connected Community®.

Conference tracks on November 9 include:

  •  SoC Architecture & Analysis: SoC Design begins with architectural concepts and major blocks. Sessions in this track will describe the architectural choices, IP integration issues, and system analyses that define the front end of ARM-based SoC design.
  •  SoC IP: SoC design depends upon reusable silicon IP. These sessions will focus on both the IP qualification process and some novel new alternatives in IP for ARM-based SoCs such as the Cortex A-15.
  • SoC Design & Verification: These sessions will cover key aspects of the design and verification flow for ARM-based SoCs, from conceptual frameworks to best practices.
  • SoC Design for Reliability and Yield: Reliability and yield are critical questions in modern SoC design, and they are no longer purely manufacturing issues. Sessions will examine the role of design teams and test engineers in managing both the yield and ultimate reliability for ARM-based SoCs.
  • SoC Verification of Challenging Structures: Modern verification methodology has developed primarily in the pure-digital space. But there are many blocks in ARM-based SoCs, from interconnect structures to tightly-integrated mixed-signal functions, that require extensions of the existing verification orthodoxy. Sessions will examine some of these cases.

Conference tracks on November 10th & 11th include:

  • Buses and Communication Channels: ARM-based processors offer a wide range of inter-system communication for external bus interfaces and memory, such as SDIO, and serial interfaces like SPI, I2C, CAN, and UART. The integrated peripherals will handle part of the protocol implementation, but considerable protocol knowledge is required to implement reliable and efficient communication links.
  • Designing with Open-Source Software: Classes in this track will go through what's available to developers, how to implement that software, and what they should avoid. They'll also determine whether open source is right for your application, and if so, how you implement it.
  • Low-power design with ARM: The ARM core is finding a home in many low-power applications. This class will look at the techniques, both on the hardware and software side, to maximize performance while reducing power.
  •  Microprocessors/Microcontrollers/DSPs: You know you need a CPU in your system, and you're pretty sure you want to go with some form of an ARM core. But what form does that CPU take? Should it be a mainstream microprocessor, a DSP, an ASIC, an FPGA, a configurable core, or something else. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of the ARM options? What if I've already selected my OS? How does that affect the choice of my CPU? How do I ensure that I'm getting the maximum performance from my CPU? In addition, this will be the first in-depth public display of the ARM Cortex A-15 server based chips which push the performance of the ARM architecture to the highest levels yet seen.
  • Multicore and Virtualization: This track will help developers become better trained in the potential impacts and benefits of these technologies in their projects. Some of the class topics may include: multicore software development challenges and techniques, including how to effectively debug and achieve improved concurrency; taking advantage of hardware multithreading; and embedded applications of system virtualization/hypervisors.
  • Networking and Connectivity: In this track, attendees will first learn what options are available to them and which is best for their application. Then they'll get down to the nitty-gritty of learning how to integrate these technologies, both in hardware and software, into their embedded system. This includes the networking stacks, power management, etc.
  • Operating System Selections: This track will look at many of the OSs available to a designer and shed ample light on which is best suited for various applications. Then, after that choice is made, instructors will demonstrate how to properly deploy the OS. Also covered in this track is the topic of Boot Firmware, as well as the infrastructure around the RTOS, including the communication stacks for USB hosts and devices, USB OTG, TCP/IP, and CAN.
  • Safety and Security: This track looks at issues surrounding firmware safety and the related concept of security against tampering, whether physical or over a network. Best practices for embedded software architecture and development tools/process are recommended to ensure a safe and secure outcome.
  • Software Debugging Tools and Techniques: These classes will teach attendees various methods of debugging their software specific to ARM cores and the ARM instruction set.
