SAN FRANCISCO, July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TechInsights, the daily source of essential business and technical information for the electronics industry's decision, will analyze the Apple 3G iPhone, to be released on July 11. TechInsights' divisions, TechOnline, Portelligent, EE Times and Semiconductor Insights, will collaborate to investigate the second-generation handset to provide technical detail about the new iPhone for readers, customers and the media.

"The analysis of the iPhone illustrates how TechInsights can offer a complete package of reporting, industry analysis and technology assessment for the worldwide engineering community in a very efficient and timely manner," stated Jenn Markey, Senior Vice President, TechOnline. "We have a wealth of knowledge and capabilities to analyze technology, including product teardowns that identify the components enabling the iPhone's functionality from Portelligent, semiconductor chip analysis from Semiconductor Insights, and broad insightful coverage of related industry developments through EE Times, the publication of first resort for the global electronics industry."

On July 11, TechOnline and Semiconductor Insights analysts will perform a video teardown of the iPhone providing insight into key design wins and system design elements. The video teardown will be accessible at http://www.techonline.com/ and http://www.eetimes.com/.

Working in parallel, product teardown specialists at Portelligent will perform a Quick Turn Teardown that will provide additional detail on the winners and losers among the integrated circuit (IC) and electronic component makers, and the decisions that Apple designers took in architecting the iPhone. The report will be distributed to Portelligent customers and will be available to technology professionals.

"In the first iPhone, released a year ago, Apple designers dispensed with a traditional keyboard and waved off moving mechanical assemblies, focusing instead on the user interface with a highly functional touch-screen display which plays to the company's greatest strength -- artful software," commented David Carey, President of Portelligent. "But Apple's competitors, particularly Samsung and LG, have not been idle, releasing their own solutions with similar functionality. The end result is a significantly more competitive smartphone market than was found only a year prior."

During the first weeks after the product launch, Portelligent will perform an in-depth "full product teardown" of the iPhone exclusively for its customers, testing performance and cataloging every IC, passive device and component in the system. Also in development is a Strategic Trends Analysis Report (STAR) on the "display-centric" element of the smartphone market, including the iPhone and its competition, where the "display is the interface" and occupies much of the surface area of the product.
