SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CMP's Semiconductor Insights, the premier provider of technical and intellectual property (IP) information to the global electronics industry, and CMP's Portelligent, the leading provider of product teardowns to the electronics industry, today announced that they will offer a joint presentation entitled "Evolution of the Smart Phone -- Systems to Semiconductors" at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday, February 12 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the Press/Media Center, Hall 2.

Semiconductor Insights' Technical Marketing Manager, Gregory Quirk, and Portelligent's Principal Analyst, Data Analysis, Jeff Brown, will examine recent trends influencing the smart phone market and the impact these trends will have on future devices. The joint presentation features in-depth analyses of multiple generations of two of Europe's top selling smart phone vendors, HTC and Nokia. Together, Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent have analyzed over 800 systems and 30,500 integrated circuits, establishing their proven expertise in demonstrating the evolution of the most popular smart phones. Quirk and Brown will highlight the increasing complexity of smart phones, from 2005 to today and beyond including current models from HTC (TyTN II) and Nokia (N95).

"Now more than ever, engineers need a comprehensive understanding of a mobile device from silicon to systems, to drive new product development faster and more cost-effectively. We will highlight the complexity of smart phone components and differing design strategies," said Paul Miller, President, CMP Electronics Group. "In addition, we are looking forward to the Mobile World Congress because it is our first joint presentation since both Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent were acquired by CMP last year, which combined our vast intellectual assets."

Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent's analysis, reveals that over successive generations HTC and Nokia have employed a different approach to adding functionality and remaining competitive. HTC has pursued more of a SoC and SiP strategy to reduce the total number of chips per phone while increasing functionality. By comparison, Nokia has increased its total dice count, but currently has a board size and cost advantage over HTC. The presentation will reveal where each strategy has been successful and what attributes will be necessary for the smart phone of the future.
