MANHASSET, N.Y., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- CMP Technology today announced that Robert Richardson has been promoted to director of the Computer Security Institute (CSI), the world's leading membership organization specifically dedicated to serving and training the information, computer and network security professional. Richardson is responsible for overseeing all conference, training, and editorial operations within the Institute. Richardson served as the editorial director of CSI for the past four years. Richardson will report to Chris Keating, vice president Security Media Group.

CSI is the world's leading membership organization specifically dedicated to serving and training the information, computer and network security professional. Since 1974, CSI has been providing education and aggressively advocating the critical importance of protecting information assets. As new threats are continuously being discovered, it is essential that security professionals keep current on how to counteract and defend against those threats. CSI addresses the issue of information security awareness through training classes, conferences, publications, blogs, newsletters as well as focused peer groups.

"One asset Robert brings to this role," Chris Keating says, "is a solid technical understanding of how security works. He knows computer and networking internals from ten years as a systems-level programmer and another ten years covering various aspects of the networking and telecom fields. In addition, Robert also has a keen business sense and a strong vision for where CSI needs to go over the coming years."

Richardson has more than 20 years of IT experience. Prior to CSI, Richardson served as senior editor of CMP's Computer Telephony magazine where his beats included telecom security, wireless, Internet messaging and next- generation phone systems. Previously, Richardson was a frequent contributor to magazines and Web publications such as BYTE, Network Magazine and Small Business Computing. Earlier, embarking on his consulting and writing career, Richardson was a network applications programmer and WAN administrator. He also occasionally serves as an adjunct teacher of computer science at Swarthmore College.

Each year, Richardson also directs the CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey, and he is often interviewed by MSNBC, NPR and The New York Times on computer security. A frequent speaker at worldwide industry events, Richardson has authored two books -- web.guide and Building Your Own High-Tech Small Office.

As high-profile cybercrimes have flooded the media in recent years, information security has become a top-of-mind issue throughout the business and government sectors, with one survey from TheInfoPro finding that 22% of Fortune 1000 companies surveyed spend more than $10 million per year specifically on computer security. The 2006 CSI/FBI survey found that 65% of respondents had suffered a virus-related incident in the previous year, 47% had suffered laptop thefts and 42% had seen employees abusing network access rules.

The 33rd Annual Computer Security Conference & Exhibition will take place November 6-8 in Orlando. CSI is the largest and most comprehensive conference in the industry with more than 150 leading information security vendors. Conference keynotes include: Jimmy Walsh, Founder and President, Wikipedia, "Whose Facts Do You Trust (and Why Do You Trust Them)?"; Richardson, "What's on the Corporate Agenda?"; and John O'Leary, CSI Director of Education, "The Compliance Monster - Care, Feeding and Slaying."
