CMP's InternetWeek announced its first annual InternetWeek 100 -- the premier ranking of the 100 most successful e-businesses building the Internet economy. The June 12, 2000, issue identifies the 10 industry winners and names General Electric the #1 E-Business of the Year. The InternetWeek 100 research provides an in-depth look at the state of the e-business marketplace.

InternetWeek used rigorous, performance-oriented metrics, developed with Benchmarking Partners, a premier consulting organization, to highlight the top 100 e-businesses across 10 major industries that are leveraging Internet technologies to drive business value. Companies are ranked based on their use of Internet technologies with customers and suppliers and to drive revenue and profitability. This groundbreaking research was followed up with one-on-one editorial interviews with the top performing companies in each category.

The Top E-businesses Winners in each Category are:
   Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals: Bristol-Meyers Squibb
   Consumer Products: Avon Products
   General Manufacturing: General Electric
   Financial Services: Charles Schwab
   High Technology: Microsoft
   Internet Marketplaces: VerticalNet
   Media and Services: AMFM
   Retail & Distribution: Sears
   Transportation: Danzas AEI
   Travel & Hospitality: Hilton Hotels
E-Business of the Year: General Electric

"The June 12, 2000, InternetWeek 100 special issue highlights the companies that are providing the most customer value and reaping the benefits of building e-businesses," said Rob Preston, Editor in Chief of InternetWeek. "And when we analyzed the data and finished the interviewing process it was clear that General Electric was far and above the company that is setting the standard for successful business transformation."

General Electric, the winner in the General Manufacturing category, was selected as the leading e-business overall, mainly because GE has moved billions of dollars in sales and spending to the Internet at lightning speed, aided by a corporate culture that rewards the sharing of ideas among its 20 business units. In fact, the selection of GE as InternetWeek E-Business Of The Year is in part a testament to the company's ability to create an Internet strategy that makes as much sense for plastics and lighting manufacturing as it does for financial services and broadcasting.

In addition, the InternetWeek 100 research underscores the rapid rate of adoption of Internet technologies and the key benefits of business transformation:

-- 22% of the respondents expect their Internet revenue to grow more
     than 60%.
-- 77% are participating in or are founding an e-marketplace.
-- Companies' sales over the Internet are accurate 84% of the time,
meaning they deliver the right products in the right quantity at the
     right time.
-- High technology leads the industry pack in leveraging the Internet as a
revenue stream-on average Internet sales account for 19% of total
revenue. This compares with the study average of 7%.
-- Companies have reduced fulfillment and delivery costs an average of
     7% as a result of e-business activities.

The study results and profiles of the industry winners are available in the June 12, 2000, issue of InternetWeek.
