Weekly Wraps Up 1996 With More Circulation, Editors and Ad Pages

CMP's CommunicationsWeek advanced its top position as America's #1 networking newspaper in 1996, expanding its lead in all three of the pillars of publishing -- editorial, circulation and advertising.

CommunicationsWeek saw its investments pay off as its market share and ad page lead continued to grow through the year. The publication ended 1996 with 2,999 ad pages, nearly 250 more pages than its nearest competitor, based on figures from Cowles/SIMBA -- the independent advertising measurement organization that publishes the newsletter Computer Publishing and Advertising Report (CPAR).

Capitalizing on the surging information needs of network IT managers, the publication last year: upped its technical and review content, and expanded and redesigned its editorial product; increased editorial staffing to more than 45 full-time editorial staff; and launched the highly successful Telepath supplement.

"We also re-tagged the publication 'The Networking Newspaper,' to reflect the fact that in the last two years, the advent of the Internet has caused the enterprise network to evolve into the globally interconnected commerce network -- in short, the network has become bigger than the enterprise!" said Mike Azzara, Publisher.

In addition to the editorial investments, the weekly publication increased its circulation more than eight percent last fall, to 190,000 network, IS and corporate management. The increase not only reflects the surging demand for the intranet- and Internet-related news, technology and business content that CommunicationsWeek delivers, according to Azzara, but also the strategic importance that networking, and network product investments have in corporate America.
