CMP's TechWeb® (http://www.techweb.com/) today launched the 10th Web site in the super site's collection of technology news and information resources: File Mine™. The site, at http://www.filemine.com/, features a comprehensive database of downloadable shareware/freeware files for DOS, Windows 3.1/95, Macintosh and other platforms.

"The wealth of free software programs available on the Net enable users to customize their computer system exactly to their personal liking," said TechWeb Editor-in-chief Jeff Pundyk. "We developed File Mine to be the gold mine for these downloadable nuggets, and filled it with features that will please both power users hunting down specific files and newbies looking for guidance."

File Mine's user interface differentiates the site from other software download services found on the Web. The site helps users track down the shareware/freeware files they need by either searching a database of over 95,000 files or by browsing through a logical directory that organizes these files into five major categories: games; home/education; Internet/intranet; multimedia/design; and programs/utilities.

Another unique feature is File Mine's Personal Download Lists, which allow users to tag files for future download as they continue browsing for related products that may be more appropriate for their needs. When File Miners are finished browsing, they can return to their Personal Download List and download the files that truly fit.

"Personal Download Lists also make it easy to tag files from the Mine using a dialup connection and then download them from the office on a high- speed connection," said Pundyk.

Other highlights:

-- Packs -- Collections of related titles that, when used together, achieve specific tasks. File Mine's first packs include a Windows 95 Survival Pack--a group of must-have utilities. More packs can be found at http://www.filemine.com/packs/packs.html.

-- Jewels -- The best downloadables in FileMine's database, according to TechWeb's editors. Jewels can be found at http://www.filemine.com/jewels/jewels.html.
