Asia-based electronics industry professionals, including corporate purchasers, supply-chain professionals and engineers, lead their counterparts in other regions in using the Internet for work. These findings and others were announced today in the 2001 International Internet Usage Study conducted by CMP Media's Electronics Group.

Produced jointly by EE Times, EBN and The EDTN Network, the Internet Usage Study surveyed 800 electronics industry professionals throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The research was conducted to aid original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in their Internet marketing efforts and to help them better construct Web sites to reach and service key prospects, partners and customers. The study profiles online usage and behavior, design activities, site visitation, technical documentation, e-commerce and online marketing techniques.

  Key findings include:

  * Among North American engineers, online activity is up 9 percent from
    last year

  * Abundant product information drives Web site visitation

  * Roughly one-third of electronics professionals "notice" banner ads

  * Banner ad responses are increased when they offer benefits to the
audience, relevant to the context of the Web site and the user

  * E-commerce can be increased by improved internal IT infrastructure,
changes in corporate culture and vendor trust

  * North America spends the most time purchasing products on the Web

  * In the lucrative Asian market, professionals are more likely to
participate in Web-based events and collaborative activities

  * 34 percent of North American procurement/supply chain professionals (for
OEMs/CEMs) have internet-based supply chain management strategies

This landmark research was introduced to a gathering of over 200 electronics marketing professionals, Web developers and advertising agency executives during a half-day presentation at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, MA on June 6, 2000, and again at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara on June 7, 2001. An invitation-only Web cast of the study is scheduled for June 27, 2001 through the Education News and Entertainment Network (http://www.enen.com/).

"As electronics manufacturers and distributors continue to develop Internet strategies to streamline supply-chain functions and market products online, we're seeing a number of different models emerge -- some more successful than others," said CMP Media Electronics Group President Steve Weitzner. "The survey takes a detailed look at the online habits of electronics professionals to help suppliers implement solutions that provide real value to users."

Beacon Technology Partners, an independent research firm located in Concord, MA, conducted the study for CMP Media's Electronic Group.
