CMP Media's EE Times, the premier electronics industry news source, reports a decrease in the average base salary of US engineers and managers in its annual Salary & Opinion Survey. The results of this study, which surveyed more than 840 US engineers and over 400 European engineers, appeared in the September 1, 2003 special issue of EE Times.

After a 10-year surge, the average 2003 base salary was $88,900, a slight decline compared to $89,100 in 2002. However, the average total compensation for US engineers and managers, which includes bonus and overtime, actually rose from $92,200 in 2002 to $92,600 in 2003.

"In the dozen or so years that we've performed this research, this is not the first time average base salaries have declined (1988-1989 was the other time). But considering the challenges this profession has faced in the past few years (layoffs, outsourcing, etc.), the results are understandable, but still significant," says Brian Fuller, EE Times Editor-in-Chief.

This extensive study reports engineer's salary by job function, geographical region, age, company size, work experience, educational background, even by marital status. Data is also compiled on job satisfaction, including job security, career aspirations as well as how engineers feel about their own job, their employer and their profession.

Another aspect of this study is to annually track, engineers' opinions of a wide range of key technologies, from System-on-Chip to Linux to 3G wireless technology; predicting which ones will reach broad acceptance, become niche or flop.
