CMP Media's CADENCE Magazine today announced details of a new circulation strategy that combines both print and digital publishing. Starting with its April 2003 issue CADENCE will serve an audience of 50,000 qualified print subscribers(1) and simultaneously launch a free digital edition to enable many other CAD professionals to read CADENCE on their computers or print it out.(2) Prior to the April 2003 issue, CADENCE magazine's print circulation was 80,000.(3)

According to CMP Media Group Publisher David M. Kalman, "The change to 50,000 reflects the demand for innovation and greater efficiency in reaching in print the most senior managers responsible for purchasing CAD-related products." The result is an exclusive print audience with a management composition of 95 percent(1). The publication's goal is to have the highest management composition amongst CAD-related publications. CMP Media does not plan any other circulation changes for the foreseeable future.

While CADENCE will concentrate its print efforts on the highest level management audience, digital publishing creates new ways to serve the wider community and maximize advertisers' results. Using Adobe Acrobat® PDF format, the digital edition enables widespread distribution in an interactive format with trackable Web links throughout both editorial and advertising. Readers may view CADENCE on-screen, or print selected articles or entire issues. When reading on-screen, readers can click Web links embedded in articles and advertisements to view related editorial content or vendor Web sites. This feature gives advertisers a new way to generate leads or fulfill special offers. Advertisements in the CADENCE print edition are included in the digital edition at no additional cost to advertisers.

The digital delivery mechanism for CADENCE is very straightforward. Every month, digital recipients receive an email notification when the latest issue becomes available. The notification includes a link to a Web page where the reader can then download the issue at no charge. The notification also lists the current advertisers along with links to their Web sites, making the email notification itself a valuable promotional tool.

Because CAD organizations are the world's main consumers of professional workstations, Kalman views CAD professionals as the most likely adopters of digital publications. CAD professionals generally have the large, high resolution displays (and high-speed production printers) that make it very easy to read or print digital magazines.

More than 30,000 CAD professionals have already been invited to receive the CADENCE digital edition.(2) Over time, digital publishing will enable CMP Media to offer CADENCE instantly to many more prospective subscribers across multiple CMP databases based on their job titles, functions, and interests in CAD-related fields.
