CMP's InformationWeek today begins a nine-city round-table discussion tour for information systems (IS) professionals and technology marketers -- The 1997 InformationWeek Redefining IS Round-tables. At each stop, the magazine's editors play host to a panel of local IS executives who will share their experiences about the role of technology in their enterprise.

"Companies rely on technology to create new business opportunities, which means that IT decisions are now made in close proximity to the application," said Tony Uphoff, Publisher. "The InformationWeek Redefining IS round- table discussions allow information technology professionals to discuss the impact this trend will have on the IS organization and technology decision- making process."

During each stop on the Tour, InformationWeek's editors will roll out the results of the second annual Redefining IS research study. The research, based on telephone interviews with a sample of 751 technology buyers, offers a snapshot of the typical technology purchase process in a variety of mid-sized and large companies, as well as on how the rapid adoption of technology will impact the role of IS managers. Highlights from the research:

* The top business priority for information systems professionals is increasing customer service.

* 50% of IS professionals report they often take a leadership role in their relationship with their business counterparts, bringing new initiatives and opportunities to the attention of business managers.

* The IS organization has evolved to include a layer of "Business Management IS" -- technology managers focused on using technology to create revenue and drive business growth.
