This honor will be presented March 9, 2005, at an awards gala being held during CMP Media's Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. In 1965, Moore made an observation that the industry now considers "law." He predicted that the number of transistors the industry would be able to place on a computer chip would double every year. In 1975, he updated his prediction to a doubling every two years. While originally intended as a rule of thumb, Moore's Law became the guiding principle for the industry to deliver ever-more-powerful semiconductor chips at proportionate decreases in cost. Moore's work began in the seminal days of the semiconductor industry as a chemist and physicist inventing technical breakthroughs necessary to create the first integrated circuits. Years later, he would begin directing and enabling technical teams that invented the first microprocessor; the first erasable, programmable read-only memory (EPROM); and the first commercially available dynamic random access memory (DRAM). These devices became the foundation for the early semiconductor industry. Moore was a founder of two of the most important technology companies in U.S. history: Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation. Fairchild brought the world the first integrated circuits, while Intel brought the microprocessor -- the "brains" of the computer -- into the marketplace. While creating these organizations, Moore also pioneered new management practices that have collectively become known as the Silicon Valley management style. In 2000, Gordon and his wife created the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. With a multibillion-dollar contribution from its founders, the foundation was able to begin carrying out its mission of seeking and developing outcome-based projects that will improve the quality of life for future generations.
