Wireless Carriers are Turning to the Great Indoors to Boost Voice and Data Service Revenues, New Report Finds

Cellular network operators are set to boost spending on equipment to improve coverage in big buildings, according to Unstrung Insider

The need to improve the quality and reliability of indoor voice and data connections will drive operators of mobile networks to invest heavily in products that boost wireless coverage within large commercial buildings and multitenant dwellings, a trend that will help suppliers of distributed antenna systems, RF repeaters, and IP-based pico base stations, finds a new report from Unstrung Insider (www.unstrung.com/insider), a paid research service of Light Reading Inc. (www.lightreading.com).

In-Building Cellular: Selling the Great Indoors analyzes the impact of voice service, 3G, wireless LAN, and IP convergence on the in-building cellular market and evaluates the business models that drive the indoor infrastructure investment case. The report profiles and analyzes nearly 20 leading providers of in-building equipment, including suppliers of distributed antenna systems, IP-based pico base stations, and RF repeaters. Companies featured in the report include ADC Telecommunications, Alcatel, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, NEC, and nearly a dozen startups.

Demand for dedicated in-building coverage systems is likely to surge as operators continue to push wireless substitution strategies in their quest for an ever-greater share of the voice services market, the report notes. Rising deployment of 3G-based data services will also require wireless operators to boost coverage in big commercial and multitenant buildings, because of the need to provide low-latency, high-speed access networks for 3G services.

Other key findings of the 29-page report include:

-- Between 30 and 60 percent of mobile calls originate indoors, which in
tandem with 3G data services is driving demand for indoor cellular
     coverage systems.

-- IP-based pico cells are pushing a "flat" 3G network architecture by
integrating multiple network elements into a single device; this is
exemplified by new products from Lucent and Motorola.

-- Deployment of multi-carrier distributed antenna systems is being driven
by carrier M&A, the need for dual 2G/3G support, and multi-tenant
     enterprise demands.

-- In the enterprise and residential segments, pico cells will go
head-to-head with wireless LAN and VOIP as operators engage in the
     fixed/mobile convergence battleground.

-- Mobile operators are leading efforts with building owners, suppliers,
and enterprises to unlock the in-building market - a major strategic
change from only a few years ago.
