WHAT: The Internet is facing a series of proposed government
regulations that critics argue would challenge the freedom of the
World Wide Web. Proponents, however, say the time has come to
set down guidelines that would ensure secure and fair Internet
activity for both consumers and businesses.

Two issues at the center of this argument are Internet privacy
and an Internet sales tax. Privacy regulation is being billed as
the big issue of 2001. With regard to e-commerce, privacy laws
would offer stricter control over the information that is passed
during business transactions, and how that information is being
used. But is this government intrusion into Internet commerce?

Lawmakers are also debating the consequences of imposing an
Internet tax bill that would supply a uniform method of sales tax
collection on commerce transactions conducted on the Web. The
topics of discussion surrounding this debate touch on state
revenues, the overall economy, and again, privacy.

InternetWeek expert Wayne Rash has written extensively about the
questions surrounding Internet privacy, and he is available to
comment on the issue. Also, Internet sales tax expert, Dave
Joachim, is available to offer insight on this controversial
           subject.
