Dr. Dobb's Journal magazine is pleased to announce in its May 2002 issue that Adele Goldberg and Dan Ingalls are recipients of the 2002 Dr. Dobb's Excellence In Programming Award. Goldberg and Ingalls are pioneers in the area of object-oriented programming in general, and the Smalltalk computer programming language in particular.

As researchers at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Goldberg and Ingalls recognized the promise of object-oriented programming and were in the unique position of being able to turn theories into practice, thereby making the software-development process easier and the resulting programs more reliable.

Goldberg is currently a founder of Neometron, a consulting company that focuses on dynamic knowledge management and building project-based online communities. Ingalls is developing Smalltalk-based software development tools with Viewpoints Research. He also runs Weather Dimensions, a company that sells a weather station he designed.

"Although we take object-oriented programming for granted today, it is hard to imagine what programming would be like with out it," said Dr. Dobb's Journal editor-in-chief Jonathan Erickson. "Adele and Dan were leaders in bringing object-based programming into the mainstream."

Dr. Dobb's Excellence In Programming Award is granted annually to individuals who, in the spirit of innovation and cooperation, have made significant contributions to the advancement of software development. Previous recipients include Linus Torvalds, Larry Wall, James Gosling, Ron Rivest, Guido van Rossum, Jon Bentley, Anders Hjelsberg, and others.
