Hewlett-Packard, Novell, and IBM clearly emerged as the leaders within the 26 product categories covered in the seventh annual "Channel Champion" survey conducted among information- technology resellers by CMP Media's Computer Reseller News.

As reported in today's issue of Computer Reseller News, the computer and communications companies each rank number one in three categories. Hewlett-Packard won in the categories of Scanners, Unix Servers and Laser Printers. Novell won in the categories of Network Management, Network Operating Systems and Groupware Platforms. IBM won in the categories of Notebooks, PC Workstations and Unix Workstations.

Other multiple-category winners were Dell Computer Corp. for Desktops and PC Servers, and Adobe Systems Inc. for Graphics Software and Web Design Tools.

Additional category winners were Acer for CD-ROM Drives, ATI Technologies Inc. for Graphics Boards, Seagate for Tape Backup and Epson America, Inc. for Inkjet Printers.

"It is important to recognize that these rankings are based on reseller satisfaction scores, not market share," said Computer Reseller News Special Reports Editor Al Senia. "Criteria for the survey included product quality, reliability, price/performance, upgradability and compatibility, along with the factors important for maintaining partnerships, like technical support, return policies and cooperative marketing programs."

Some 1,079 resellers participated in this year's survey, which was conducted by Answers Research, Inc., Solana Beach, Calif.

In addition to being reported in the June 21 issue of Computer Reseller News, the Channel Champions results will be published online at http://www.crn.com/.
