Second Annual Survey Confirms Boundaries Are Blurring Between Enterprise Organizations and Service Providers

Network Magazine has completed its second reader survey on the state of the New Public Network, the next-generation infrastructure being built by enterprise organizations and service providers. The annual survey tracks trends and developments in this rapidly emerging and fast-changing business environment.

With nearly 4000 respondents, Butterflies & Castles, Inc., an independent marketing communications firm serving the high-tech industry, conducted this year's survey online. Participants include networking professionals at carriers and enterprise end-user organizations, as well as outsource partners-IT consultants, systems integrators, distributors, and VARs (value-added resellers).

Survey results confirm that enterprise organizations and service providers are working in close collaboration, sharing purchasing and deployment decisions and pooling expertise. More than half of the enterprise IT respondents said they consult with service providers before buying equipment for their own networks.

As this year's survey reveals, it's not just expertise and advice that are being shared. Carrier respondents indicate they already control nearly 33 percent of the budgets of their end-user customers. They expect to see that number rise to more than 40 percent within five years.

Another notable trend is the growing importance of outsource partners-to both enterprise organizations and service providers. Nine out of ten respondents in this group are working with enterprise clients, while one in three also count carriers among their clientele.

"It's clear that we've staked a claim to the right editorial position," commented publisher Karla Johnson. "Our tag line reads 'Where the enterprise meets the New Public Network.' The traditional boundaries are blurring and a new-more collaborative-model is emerging."

Among the top-line findings of this year's survey:

-- Nearly three out of four enterprise IT professionals have already
turned over mission-critical applications to their service providers
-- or plan to do so soon.
-- Backbone capabilities and capacity were the top two factors when
     choosing a service provider.
-- E-mail and Web hosting head the list of outsourced applications.
-- The bulk of the equipment being purchased by service providers is
IP-based, including backbone and edge routers, load-balancers, and VOIP
     gateways.
-- Some 80 percent of outsource partners help enterprise organizations
decide on equipment purchases, while 50 percent do the same job for
     carriers.
