CMP Media Inc. announced today that it will reconfigure its TechWeb online brand, enabling the company's Business Technology Group to strengthen its integrated media solutions for corporate technology buyers, builders and managers.

One of the first online news sites, TechWeb has become a comprehensive network of content-creation sites offering industry news and analysis. As a result of ongoing evaluation of advertiser's needs and reader's online information preferences, TechWeb will migrate to align with the BTG's integrated media brands. TechWeb will package access to all BTG news and analysis content via interfaces tailored for visitors whose needs span the multiple BTG industry-leading brands, such as InformationWeek, Internet Week, Network Computing and eBusiness Conference and Expo.

"In retail and other areas of e-commerce, the notion of a pure-play Internet model has already given way to an integrated model -- that's the whole clicks-and-bricks story," said Adam Marder, president of the BTG. "Media is no different than any other industry. Within the BTG, we are making online into an integrated component of what we offer to all of our enterprise IT customers, whether they're readers or advertisers."

Much of TechWeb's content-creation activity will transfer to the Group's brands. Readers will benefit because more content will be created under the guidance of the brands' experts. And, at the same time, readers will have the added value of the TechWeb "content packager" site providing simultaneous, custom-tailored access to the content of all the BTG brands.

"Content Packager" is a significant emerging business model described by the firms of Ernst & Young and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young in their recent joint report, Business Redefined: Connecting Content, Applications, and Customers. According to the research, "Content Packagers consolidate and categorize the overabundance of available information and entertainment choices and filter them through a productive user interface to make the user experience simpler and more efficient." A CEO quoted in the report said, "It is difficult to distill content in the online world, and the content packager who can do that will create value."

Also as part of the reorganization, sites such as Byte.com and WebTools will be incorporated as part of the Web offering of the Software Development Media Group, part of CMP's Specialized Technologies Group. Other sites that don't tightly align with the BTG's business technology focus, such as Winmag.com and TechShopper.com, will likely be divested. An estimated 33 people will be impacted by this reorganization.
