Citing faster-than-expected growth of its Semiconductor Business News (SBN) online service and new options for reaching the semiconductor industry in print that emerged with Miller Freeman's acquisition of CMP in June, CMP Media announced today that it will cease publication of the monthly print edition of Semiconductor Business News immediately and devote full resources to the Web site of the same name (seminews.com). Semiconductor Business News (SBN) print edition will not appear in August.

"The SBN concept has been Web driven from the outset," said Steve Weitzner, vice president and group publisher of the Electronics Group formed in the merger of CMP and Miller Freeman's Electronics OEM publication groups. "We started the magazine as a print adjunct to the online news service, but envisioned SBN from the start as the model for developing our real-time online news gathering and reporting capability. We have found normal print disciplines, such as pre-scheduled features and columns, are not relevant to the minute-to-minute pace of reporting news on the Web, and we want to devote more resources to online news of the fast-moving semiconductor industry."

"SBN's seminews.com has become the most popular site devoted to semiconductor industry news on the web, seeing more than two million page views in June," Weitzner said. At the same time, growth in the number of online advertisers has taken off during 1999. "Budgets for marketing to the semiconductor community on the Internet are taking off," Weitzner said, adding that "the growth this year has been dramatic."

"The combination of CMP's OEM group and Miller Freeman's EOEM publications has also brought Silicon Strategies into the picture, and with it the ability to serve a broader industry community than was targeted by SBN's print edition. Together, the SBN online news service and the monthly Silicon Strategies magazine will deliver fast-paced tactical data of the day and thoughtful, strategic technology intelligence to the varied group of decision makers that make up the semiconductor community -- including chip makers, system builders, capital equipment suppliers, foundries, intellectual property (IP) houses, software and service providers, investment analysts and venture capitalists," Weitzner said. The SBN print edition had only targeted executives at semiconductor manufacturing companies.

With enhanced editorial resources, including participation from other news organizations within the Electronics group, SBN will expand its continuous coverage of the semiconductor industry. "We want to build on our success of creating the number one Web site for the semiconductor industry, and increase our lead in the online news medium," Weitzner said.
