CMP Media's Network Computing Magazine has established The Foundation for Future Technology Leaders (FFTL), a unique collaborative effort to provide information technology educational scholarships and training programs to high school students. The initiative is CMP Media's first program designed to directly deliver financial assistance to graduating high school seniors seeking college degrees in various fields of information technology. Network Computing will provide seed and ongoing funding to the newly formed non-profit entity, and is currently soliciting technology leaders for partnering contributions.

"Our Foundation for Future Technology Leaders responds to two critical needs in today's IT market," said Fritz Nelson, Network Computing publisher and CMP vice president. "Many deserving students cannot pursue IT studies due to the steep rise in college costs. At the same time, the IT arena continues to face a dearth of college-educated talent. We hope to provide assistance on both fronts, starting in one focused area, then growing in select regions to help students, and the industry, on a national scale."

The FFTL has already begun working with community and educational leaders in school districts within Fairfax County, Virginia, the first targeted area from which foundation scholarship applicants will be drawn from in the next year. The Foundation plan calls for initial funding awards to be given for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Concurrently, Network Computing is working with its business partners and technology vendors to generate the Foundation's first wave of funds. In addition to providing financial support, Foundation contributors will serve on a steering committee to direct the near-and long-term strategy of the Foundation. Partnering companies will also receive mention in articles about the Foundation appearing in Network Computing.

The FFTL sprang from reader feedback to Nelson's 'Full Nelson' column in the January 8, 2001 issue of Network Computing (http://www.networkcomputing.com/1201/1201fn.html). Dubbed "Back to School," the column described IT-related programming at Chantilly High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. Nelson again discussed information technology education issues as well as the vision and launch of the Foundation in the August 6, 2001, issue of Network Computing. The launch of the FFTL extends Network Computing's long-time industry leadership in building and sharing technology information and expertise in print and online content, in research and through its events division. Twice per month, 220,000 IT professionals turn to Network Computing to get the information they need to make the right purchase decisions. The Network Computing brand includes the online site http://www.networkcomputing.com/, which gives visitors immediate access to an interactive Buyer's Guide database and other customizable content that can be tailored to meet specific needs.
