DesignCon 2015 Keynote Program Spans Past, Present and Future of Design Engineering

Representatives from Stanford University, Synopsys and Efficient Power Conversion Corporation to Take the Stage Jan. 27-30 in Santa Clara

Oct 28, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DesignCon, the premier conference for chip, board and systems design engineers in the high-speed communications and semiconductor communities, today announced its robust keynote lineup as it enters its twentieth year. Influential electronic design professionals from Stanford University, Synopsys and Efficient Power Conversion Corporation will take the DesignCon stage January 27-30 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. DesignCon, the premier conference for chip, board and systems design engineers in the high-speed communications and semiconductor communities, will run January 27-30, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley.

DesignCon keynote presentations will span three days of in-depth technical conference programming. From the origins of electrical engineering, to the importance of effective standards, to the potential of GaN, the following keynote presentations will take attendees through a narrative of the industry's past, present and future:

  • Thomas H. Lee Ph.D, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University
In his retrospective talk, "Go Big or Go Home: The First Transatlantic Telegraph Cable and the Birth of Electrical Engineering," Thomas H. Lee will draw on the origins of electrical engineering to explain synergies between research and development. In his two decades researching CMOS at Stanford, Lee has authored numerous works and served as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He holds 57 US patents and was the recipient of the 2011 Ho-AM Prize in Engineering. He will speak Tuesday, January 27 at 12:00 pm.
  • Karen Bartleson, Senior Director of Corporate Programs and Initiatives, Synopsys
Karen Bartleson, equipped with over 30 years of experience in semiconductors, will present "The Ten Commandments for Effective Standards: What Engineers Might Not Know About Standardization." As the 2013-2014 term president of the IEEE Standards Association, Bartleson is uniquely qualified to explain why standards matter for current and future technologies, and prepare attendees to better understand and contribute to standards development. Since her start at Synopsys in 1995, Bartleson has worked to improve customer satisfaction via multiple channels, and in 2003 was the recipient of the Marie R. Pistilli Women in Design Automation Achievement Award. She will speak Wednesday, January 28 at 12:00 pm.
  • Alex Lidow Ph.D, CEO, Co-Founder, Efficient Power Conversion Corporation
For more than 35 years, Alex Lidow has been dedicated to developing new semiconductors that improve energy conversion and usage. His talk, "Faster and Lower Cost than Silicon – GaN is Making a New Future!" will look at the promising potential of GaN as a serious contender to the dominance of silicon over the past 60 years. Lidow is the co-inventor of the HEXFET power MOSFET and formerly served as the CEO of International Rectifier for 12 years. He will speak Thursday, January 29 at 12:00 pm.

"Celebrating DesignCon's 20-year history, the keynote program will explore some of the most important fundamental elements of the engineering industry's development, as well as provide a glimpse into future technologies," said DesignCon Technical Program Director, Janine Love. "Our keynote speakers are truly some of the brightest in the industry, and will provide actionable insight to the design engineering community."
