InformationWeek Healthcare Announces the 2013 'Healthcare CIO 20'

Recognizing The Range Of Leaders Driving Change In Health IT

Jul 31, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, July 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- InformationWeek Healthcare released this year's Healthcare CIO 20, a list of the 20 most influential and accomplished technology leaders driving change in health IT.

This is the third year editors of InformationWeek Healthcare have compiled this distinguished list of IT decision makers, selected for their ability to balance practical realities, like government regulatory requirements that dominate the short-term tech agenda, with a sense of purpose.

"Our 20 healthcare IT leaders are finding ways to help their organizations strike the right balance between these pressures," said Chris Murphy, Editor, InformationWeek. "Health IT requires tough choices, and these 20 leaders are helping their organizations get those choices right."

Although it is called the "CIO" 20, people holding many titles who are driving change in their organizations and the industry were included. The list calls out leaders in informatics, in data integration, even the CEO of a health information exchange. This mix reflects the fact that many people are influencing the tech decisions at health organizations.

The Healthcare CIO 20 includes:

  • Michael Lee, Director of Informatics at Atrius Health, who has tested out patients devices that could be used in their homes and used to set verbal reminders to take medication.
  • Albert Oriol, CIO at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego, who has been experimenting with the Internet of things -- connecting monitoring devices in new ways for better understanding of patient health.
  • Rasu Shrestha, VP at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who is trying out new ways to apply analytical software.
  • Joy Grosser, VP & CIO of Iowa Health System, who led an integrated EHR implementation which she says requires "top to bottom" openness and change.
