NEW YORK, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Passive optical networking (PON) is now established as the leading technology for high-speed broadband access, with worldwide sales of GPON equipment alone expected to reach $4.7 billion by 2011, according to the latest edition of Light Reading's Components Insider (http://www.lightreading.com/commchip), a paid research service of TechWeb's Light Reading (http://www.lightreading.com/).

PON Components User Survey: 2008 Market Trends, a 15-page report in PDF format, analyzes current and projected use of PON components by systems vendors. It is based on the results of an exclusive, worldwide survey of engineers, designers, and product managers who work for telecom and networking system equipment manufacturers. Their responses make it clear that PON components from a wide range of companies are used to develop systems.

The survey goes beyond gauging the depth and breadth of PON component usage to include insights into how customers view vendors. The report includes a breakdown of the various PON technologies, including 10-Gbit/s PON, and the vendors that service providers are using for OLT controllers, ONT/ONU controllers, transceiver devices, and optical components. Respondents were also asked which factors were most important to them in choosing these components, as well as how they rate each of the leading vendors for ONT/ONU controllers, transceiver devices, and optical components.

"The push for greater bandwidth coming from South Korea, Japan, and other countries is set to shake up the PON market," notes Simon Stanley, research analyst for Light Reading's Components Insider and author of the report. "The cost of PON equipment is also falling, with semiconductor and optical component vendors introducing new products that deliver better performance and greater integration. This is a very competitive market with lots of competitors, but few vendors can offer complete solutions across the varied PON technologies."

Semiconductor and optical component vendors have played a significant role in bringing down the cost of PON equipment, Stanley says. "There are now ten or more venders in each component segment, including controllers, transceivers, and optical modules. As the industry moves forward with growing volumes of GPON solutions and moves to develop 10-Gbit/s PON solutions, these vendors are jostling for position. We are likely to see some significant consolidation over the next three to four years, with a small number of vendors taking the top positions."

Key findings of PON Components User Survey: 2008 Market Trends include the following:

-- Early BPON deployments in North America and EPON in Asia/Pacific are
now being superseded by GPON and WDM PON.
-- With carriers demanding ever-higher bandwidths, the race is on to
     provide 100+ Mbit/s to subscribers.
-- The PON sector is ripe for significant consolidation over the next
     three to four years.

PON Components User Survey: 2008 Market Trends provides critical data and analysis for a range of industry participants, including:

-- Suppliers of PON components who need independent analysis of expected
market demand for their products, as well as deeper insight into how
their products compare with those of competitors
-- Telecom and networking equipment vendors looking for quantitative
assessments of how PON equipment will be deployed in the coming months
     and years
-- Investors needing a better understanding of the PON component sector,
and which suppliers are best positioned in this market
