Robert Richardson Promoted to Director of CMP's Computer Security Institute

MANHASSET, N.Y., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- CMP Technology today announced that Robert Richardson has been promoted to director of the Computer Security Institute (CSI), the world's leading membership organization specifically dedicated to serving and training the information, computer and network security professional. Richardson is responsible for overseeing all conference, training, and editorial operations within the Institute. Richardson served as the editorial director of CSI for the past four years. Richardson will report to Chris Keating, vice president Security Media Group.

Richardson has more than 20 years of IT experience. Prior to CSI, Richardson served as senior editor of CMP's Computer Telephony magazine where his beats included telecom security, wireless, Internet messaging and next- generation phone systems. Previously, Richardson was a frequent contributor to magazines and Web publications such as BYTE, Network Magazine and Small Business Computing. Earlier, embarking on his consulting and writing career, Richardson was a network applications programmer and WAN administrator. He also occasionally serves as an adjunct teacher of computer science at Swarthmore College.

Each year, Richardson also directs the CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey, and he is often interviewed by MSNBC, NPR and The New York Times on computer security. A frequent speaker at worldwide industry events, Richardson has authored two books -- web.guide and Building Your Own High-Tech Small Office.

As high-profile cybercrimes have flooded the media in recent years, information security has become a top-of-mind issue throughout the business and government sectors, with one survey from TheInfoPro finding that 22% of Fortune 1000 companies surveyed spend more than $10 million per year specifically on computer security. The 2006 CSI/FBI survey found that 65% of respondents had suffered a virus-related incident in the previous year, 47% had suffered laptop thefts and 42% had seen employees abusing network access rules.
