CMP Media's Software Development magazine today announced the 108 finalists for this year's Jolt Product Excellence and Productivity Awards. The finalists in 15 categories were chosen from 288 nominations by a team of Software Development editors, columnists and industry gurus.

For the past 14 years, Software Development Jolt Product Excellence and Productivity Awards have been presented annually to products that have "jolted" the industry with their significance and made the task of creating software faster, easier and more efficient. Jolt cola, the fabled soft drink quaffed by software developers for sustenance during development project marathons, sponsors the awards presentation.

This year's awards ceremony will take place on March 16 at the Santa Clara Convention Center during SD West 2005, which attracts more than 3,000 software developers, renowned industry speakers and press annually. Winners will also be featured in the June issue of Software Development magazine.

"The explosion of interest in the Jolt Awards this year may portend a developer tool renaissance," commented Editor in Chief, Alexandra Weber Morales. "After several years of vendor consolidation and stifling economics, it appears there's a new flourishing of concepts in such leading-edge areas as mobile applications, aspect-oriented programming and design agents. The finalists represent a cross section of the best and brightest tools for every phase of the software development lifecycle."

Technical Editor Rosalyn Lum added, "Each year, the competition gets tougher, with many more products contending for the Software Development Jolt and Productivity Awards. And as markets evolve, we're finding that the maturity in certain niches warrants new categories. For instance, Project Management Tools became Management Tools this year in order to include analysis and portfolio management; and the Design and Analysis Tools category was changed to Design Tools to accommodate the growing number of products in that field. This constant refinement was also extended to Testing Tools -- this time, we distinguished between Automated Testing Tools and Defect Tracking Tools. It's truly an exciting year."

One Jolt Award and three Productivity Awards are presented for each category. Jolt Product Excellence Award winners receive a coveted trophy -- a can of Jolt cola encased in Lucite.
