InformationWeek, the leading IT media brand, introduced today a new component to its media platform, entitled "Services." Services extends the InformationWeek brand beyond print, online, research and events, creating a resource that provides benchmarking, training and consultancy services for organizations.

The Software Genome Council (SGC) is the first offering under the benchmarking arm and stems from a partnership between InformationWeek and Emergeon -- a professional services firm specializing in assisting technology organizations to deliver software on time and on budget. The SGC is a fee-based membership organization composed of IT executives, designed to increase on-target performance of software projects.

"Since InformationWeek is the leader in sharing information across a variety of disciplines to better support the people who buy, build and manage information technology, it was a natural progression for us to expand our media platform to encompass specific service tools directed towards our reader and advertising customers," said Michael Friedenberg, VP and publisher of InformationWeek. "The Software Genome Council is an example of a critical resource that will help our audience improve predictability and maintain control of their software development projects.

Specifically, the SGC analyzes software development data at the project level to uncover the "DNA" of successful software development environments. Initial observations and recommendations, based on a database of 6,000 completed projects, have already proven to be accurate and actionable. As the project expands, its predictive capabilities will become an even more powerful tool to accurately forecast and control software projects and demonstrate the benefit of improved processes. The goal of the SGC is to give IT executives the needed tools to drive their goals and improve ROI.

"Selecting InformationWeek as the platform to launch the Software Genome Council was an obvious choice for us since they are consistently recognized as the leader in reporting emerging trends and directions within the IT category," said Ira Grossman, president of Emergeon. "Our goal with the Software Genome Council is to assist technology executives by ensuring that software projects meet specifications, are delivered on time and on budget, and exceed quality expectations."

The SGC membership also includes access to industry wide research allowing member organizations to see how they compare with other companies within the industry. Each member will also receive a private assessment with specific recommendations based on their corporate culture. Throughout the year, members will be invited to participate in live forums to discuss current findings and issues with the Council and InformationWeek.

Laurie Vyhovsky, Director of the Project Management Office, Schwan Food Company, which has been delivering fine frozen food since 1952, recently signed up for membership with the SGC. "The ability to compare our project performance metrics against those contained in the Software Genome Council's databank will enable us to both target improvement efforts and measure the benefits achieved," said Laurie. "Conversely, we'll leverage comparisons that indicate areas of relative strength in the marketing of our products and services."

The additional InformationWeek Services of training and consultancy are expected to also launch in 2003. For more information on how to become a member of the Software Genome Project, please visit http://www.softwaregenomecouncil.com/ .
