CMP Media Enters China with Licensed Content to Networking China; Publication Enhanced with Editorial from Network ComputingPRNewswire CMP Media (NASDAQ: CMPX) has entered China's burgeoning information-technology market with an agreement to license content to Networking China, the first networking publication in that country. Beginning on May 3, the weekly publication will be enhanced with editorial from CMP's Network Computing, the premier technology-solutions magazine. Networking China, with circulation of 48,000, is jointly owned by the Beijing-based Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) and Chinese Science Times, affiliates of the China Academy of Sciences. "To be successful, China's MIS and networking professionals must understand the latest networking technology, products and applications. Most of the existing Chinese publications cannot fulfill their information needs," said Jinduo Zhao, Networking China's chief editor. "Now with the license from Network Computing, we can provide the most authoritative and most up-to-date information to our readers, enhanced by the results of the 'Real-World Labs." Jinduo noted that the 1998 networking market in China was $40 billion (U.S.), including the telecommunications infrastructure. CNIC estimates a doubling of Internet users every six months. In January 1998 there were 620,000 Web users in China. The figure climbed to 1.27 million in July 1998 and 2.2 million in January 1999. "We have been working closely with CNIC and Chinese Science Times for several years and are confident that their relationship with the China Academy of Science will guarantee a very strong, locally adapted, locally written networking title," said David W. Tyler, CMP vice president/international licensing and online development. "1999 and 2000 are the 'networking years' in China with 80 percent of the government expected to be networked within two years. This certainly will drive demand for products and technology." Computer Network Information Center is China's only registration and approval organization for Internet domain names (.cn). Chinese Science Times is one of the country's two information-technology dailies. CMP Media Inc.
