Aerospace industry giant Boeing is preparing to launch a huge corporate-wide intranet that will enable the company to revamp more than 100 separate business processes, according to a report posted this morning on CommunicationsWeek Interactive (http://www.commweek.com/). The intranet initiative, probably the largest and most complex ever introduced by an American company, is designed to improve the way the company deals with its defense and commercial airline customers.

According to the report, Boeing is instituting the project to save money, reduce process cycle time and integrate crucial new business units. Furthermore, the intranet is a critical component in the assimilation of more than 100,000 new employees from Boeing's acquisition of Lockheed units and its proposed acquisition of McDonnell Douglas.

"Boeing is constructing an intranet that will forever impact the way it does business, and the way the enterprise community will deploy their own intranets," said Editor-at-Large John Evan Frook, who was given exclusive behind-the-scenes access by Boeing. "Without losing their existing technology, the company has opened up business systems, structured its Web policies to encourage use while still maintaining control. It's quite a feat for an organization of its size."
