CMP Media's Network Magazine, the monthly networking publication for network IT professionals, announces the results of its annual North American Carrier and ISP Surveys. Nearly 4,000 readers ranked over 12 leading carriers and ISPs on key service categories in this unique Network Magazine survey, which focuses on the needs and buying trends of its readership.

In the carrier portion of the survey, respondents ranked carriers based on their service offerings, including private lines, frame relay, ATM, VPNs, dedicated Internet access, Ethernet services, and Web hosting. Top honors went to Sprint and, for the second consecutive year, AT&T. Sprint took top marks for Frame Relay, and AT&T was honored for its ATM services.

In addition to evaluating service offerings, the survey revealed buying patterns for the second half of 2002. Voice over IP, with 46%, was the most popular service chosen by network IT managers who are planning to or are currently implementing this service. Site-to-site VPNs and remote access VPNs, both at 36%, ranked second. Storage rolled in at third overall, with 31%.

"Every year Network Magazine relies on its readers to rank service provider and ISP offerings," said International Technology editor David Greenfield. "The resulting data provides an excellent tool for network IT professionals when choosing services and partnering with providers."

The ISP portion of the survey had an overwhelming response with over 3,000 network IT managers rating their ISPs. This is close to three times the number of respondents who ranked their ISPs in Network Magazine's 2001 survey. This year's participants evaluated seven areas-reliability, performance, security, breadth of services, pricing, support, and installation and repairs. The ISP survey concluded that reliability is the most important factor to customers.

Genuity ranked #1 overall, leading in reliability, performance, and customer support. Time Warner Telecom came in #2, ranking high in price and installation repairs.

The Carrier and ISP Surveys

Butterflies & Castles, Inc., an independent research firm, conducted the research on behalf of Network Magazine. Complete results showing reader experiences with Carriers and ISPs have been rolled out in two Network Magazine articles: North American Carrier Survey: Simply the Best in the August issue and North American ISP Survey: Looking for Number Two in the September issue.
