The Child Abuse Unit-SPCC, a child protective not-for-profit law enforcement agency, announced the July 31 launch of its inaugural First Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at Bethpage State Park's Red Course, site of the 2002 U.S. Open. Bernadette Castro, New York State Park Commissioner, and Jack Agostino, Head Boys' Basketball Coach, Amityville Boys High School, will welcome Pat La Fontaine, former New York Islander, and an impressive roster of celebrity college basketball coaches and staff: Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University; Jim Calhoun, University of Connecticut; Jim Christian, Kent State University; Paul Hewitt, University of Georgia Tech; James Jones, Yale University; Joe Jones, Columbia University; Louis Orr, Seton Hall University; Tom Pecora, Hofstra University; Bill Self, University of Kansas; Gary Walters, Rutgers University; and Jay Wright, Villanova University.

The event will include a chance for someone to sink a $1,000,000 shot from 165 yards, a $10,000 putting challenge, two $25,000 hole-in-one competitions, and a chance to win a brand new car, plus on-course contests. Following golf, there will be a lobster clambake at Carlyle on The Green, a unique Bethpage restaurant that combines the best of Long Island's past with contemporary elegance. All golfers will receive special amenities to commemorate the event. The day will end with entertainment and swing dancing under the stars.

The cost to play in the Golf Classic is $400 per person. Non-golfers may purchase $100 tickets to participate in the festivities at the Carlyle.

The Child Abuse Unit-SPCC

CAU-SPCC is a child protective, state chartered, not-for-profit law enforcement agency that interacts with Federal, State and Local law enforcement, Social Service and educational institutions, and is mandated to operate under Social Service Law and the Family Court Act.

The CAU-SPCC is unique in that it is empowered by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Service to concentrate its efforts solely to enforce the laws that pertain to minors. Its purpose is to carry out programs designed to advocate, promote and ensure the general welfare of children, to investigate allegations and crimes against children, and to enforce the laws concerning same. Its investigators are New York State Peace Officers who are trained and state approved in the recognition, reporting and documentation of child abuse cases.
