CMP Media's TechWeb Network today launched The Open Enterprise, a news-and-analysis Web site devoted entirely to open-source and standards-based software in a corporate setting. Dubbed "Open Source Intelligence for Enterprise IT," the web site (http://www.theopenenterprise.com/) is produced collaboratively by two TechWeb Network member sites, InformationWeek.com and InternetWeek.com.

Updated throughout the day, The Open Enterprise features the latest news on open-source corporate use combined with a different big-picture, technology-rich feature kicking off each week. That feature is then augmented every day that week with related content -- product reviews, interviews with "open" enterprises, reader forums, case studies, research results, vendor interviews and more.

The Open Enterprise's inaugural feature is "The Promise of the Open Enterprise." The piece focuses on what it means to use open-source and standards-based software in enterprise IT systems, how they change IT practices and policies, how enterprise business technologists acquire open-source software, and issues of deployment, architecture, cost-benefits and risks.

Open-source software's increasing importance to enterprises can be summed in two words: lower cost. In a survey of 260 enterprise IT executives conducted for The Open Enterprise's launch, 64 percent said that the total cost of ownership of open-source software is at least 25 percent less than proprietary software. Other benefits of open-source software are that it is easier to procure and deploy, and a worldwide community of developers who make open source contributions means most software problems are rapidly repaired. Complete survey results are available on the web site.

Planned future features currently include "The Hidden Cost of Linux Applications," "The Microsoft Juggernaut," "Eclipse vs. NetBeans: Development Tools Go Open Source" and "Open Source Integration."

But all that may change. "The Open Enterprise will practice what it preaches," said Rich Karpinski, co-editor of the site. "We published an 'open source' editorial calendar on the home page today with our initial 10-week set of coverage plans. We're inviting site visitors to discuss, add to, or suggest alternatives to all of our ideas."

Co-editor Tom Smith adds, "We'll adjust that calendar in real-time as suggestions cause our plans to evolve."

Karpinski and Smith are veteran journalists who have covered computing, communications and networking for nearly two decades.

"Our editors saw that open-source software was infiltrating corporate IT environments in a way that's much broader than just Linux and Apache," said Mike Azzara, director, content development, for CMP Media's Business Technology Group, which includes the TechWeb Network. "They came up with this idea in the beginning of September, wanting to strike while the topic was hot. We committed to launching the site before the month was out." Azzara, no stranger to openness, was founding editor of Open Systems Today in 1988, and oversaw that biweekly newspaper focused on Unix and open systems for seven years. OST merged with InformationWeek in 1995.

"We're delighted to provide this targeted advertising proposition for vendors wishing to acquire a leadership position in the open-source enterprise market," said Amy Sklar, managing director of the TechWeb Network.
