Dr. Dobb's Journal magazine has announced it will launch in its September 2000 issue an important and unique series of articles on the topic of "forensic computer analysis" -- the study of computing mishaps and intrusions based on the reconstruction of past events. Co-authored by computer security experts Dan Farmer and Wietse Venema, the series will discuss topics ranging from the analysis of unknown programs, to the recovery and reconstruction of removed and unallocated data. While the author's freely available "Coroner's Toolkit" (a set of UNIX data collection and analysis tools) will be referenced, the focus of the series is on the thought process behind the scenes -- not simply the coding details or how to use the programs. Farmer and Venema are also authors of the legendary SATAN security program, and researchers at EarthLink and IBM, respectively.
