CMP Media Inc.'s Network Computing, a twice-monthly solutions magazine serving network and IS professionals, led the seven-title networking category in ad page growth for 1996, according to Cowles/Simba Information's Computer Publishing & Advertising Report (CPAR).

Network Computing increased ad pages by 25.1 percent (502.6 pages) to 2,503 pages, leading the other networking titles tracked by CPAR by a wide margin. Overall the computer periodical market was flat--the 53 titles, according to CPAR, grew only 0.6 percent in aggregate last year.

Network Computing's leadership in ad page gains capped a banner year for the publication. The magazine increased its ad page market share by 3.6 percent -- the largest increase among the seven networking titles--to account for 15.6 percent of category, according to The Auditor/TAP.

Editorially, in 1996 Network Computing strengthened its product with extensive Internet/intranet coverage including a new monthly sectionycorporate.net.

Furthermore, two editors with real-world networking experience joined: Senior Technology Editor Nancy Cox, a renown messaging expert formerly with Lockheed Martin Information Systems of Orlando, Fla.; and Associate Technology Editor Dan Backman, who tests and reviews network and systems management, remote access and other network products from one of Network Computing's Real- World Lab™ sites at Syracuse University.

Last year, the publication also: added a new lab site (in Northern California) to its network of corporate and university facilities; and garnered three editorial awards including a Jesse H. Neal Certificate of Merit for "Best Use of New Media," from the American Business Press for Network Computing Online (http://www.networkcomputing.com/).

Networking issues are a key component of today's IT mandate, which is forcing companies to implement distributed systems solutions at various levels throughout and beyond their enterprise.

"Network Computing's editorial delivers the information influential IT professionals need to do their jobs. No other publication can give them enterprise solutions tested over a wide area network of real-world sites across the U.S." said Deborah Gisonni, Publisher Network Computing.

For the third straight year, Network Computing also showed strong gains in readership. Mirroring the Simmons CompPro IV study earlier in the year, the publication won all major readership categories among networking publications, according to the IntelliQuest CIMS v3.0 results. Network Computing's Average Issue Audience, at 531,000, was 33% higher than the next competitive networking publication.
