CMP Media's InformationWeek to Run Dramatic Expose: 'Technology and the Fight Against Child Porn' in February 14 issue

The Internet is enriching the lives of children around the world, but advances in computer technology -- such as encryption, key-chain storage devices, peer-to-peer networks, and Internet relay chat -- have also made it possible for child pornographers and pedophiles to distribute their reprehensible material around the globe with unfortunate ease and efficiency. Law enforcement is finding new ways to fight the scourge, going after the Internet billing companies that make it possible for the creators of child-porn-oriented web sites to operate, and also using technology such as Google to identify such web sites. Meantime, IT vendors including Microsoft are taking more steps to help in the war, as well.

Still, it may not be enough, child protection advocates worry. "The problem is that as law enforcement increases the number of cases, it's increasing in a linear fashion, whereas the problem is exploding in an exponential way," says Robert Flores, administrator of the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, quoted in a story written by John Foley, "Technology and The Fight Against Child Porn," to appear in InformationWeek's February 14 issue.

Wired Kids' executive director and founder, Parry Aftab (who writes The Privacy Lawyer Column for Informationweek.com), also interviewed for the story, shares the concern. "The magnitude of the problem is so big that law enforcement can no longer even put a dent in it," says Aftab, whose organization this week announces that it is launching Katiesplace.org, a website that will provide mental health support for victims of Internet sexual exploitation.
