Digital Video Expo West Announces New Special Events and Keynote Address

CMP Media's Digital Video Group today announced the addition of new special events and a keynote address to its Digital Video Expo West 2003. The 7th annual event is returning to the Los Angeles Convention Center from December 9-12, 2003 as one of the industry's largest and most comprehensive events focused on providing information on cutting-edge tools, techniques, and technologies to the professional digital video community.

Topping these program additions is a special keynote address from 12:30 P.M.-1:30 P.M. on Friday, December 12, featuring Academy Award winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, ASC. Mr. Wexler, who has earned five Academy Award nominations and two Oscars for Best Cinematography, has an impressive body of work that includes Milos Forman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," Mike Nichols' "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," Hal Ashby's "Bound for Glory," and "Coming Home," John Sayles's "Matewan," and Touchstone Pictures's "Blaze," a short film "T for Tumbleweed," and his first feature documentary, "The Living City."

  Digital Video in the Classroom: How to Increase Communication Skills with

(Wednesday, December 10, 10:00 A.M.-12:30 P.M.) -- This course demonstrates how to teach communication skills to students using their current studies and interests' and DV. It is based on the "Kranky Kids" program, which through DV technologies has proven very successful in getting students to stand in front of a class or audience with poise and confidence. Presented by Lishka DeVoss, founder of Kranky Kids after-school programs.

DV.com Community Connection

(Wednesday, December 10, 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M) -- The DV.com Community Connection is the place for digital video professionals to mingle and network with their peers. From video production classes, to school television studios, to regular integration into core curriculum and distance learning courses, digital video is increasingly being recognized as a key learning tool for students and teachers of the visual generation. Following Wednesday's session: Digital Video in the Classroom: How to Increase Communication with DV, come meet with other educators and the editor in chief of Technology & Learning magazine to network, exchange ideas and talk about topics you'd like to see covered in future education sessions at Digital Video Expo and in the pages of CMP's newest publication, Digital Video in the Classroom.

Video Art in the Age of DV

(Thursday, December 11, 12:30 P.M.-1:30 P.M) -- Major museums, galleries, and festivals throughout the world are embracing the exhibition of video as fine art. The adoption by artists of digital video tools is creating a creative vocabulary which merges imagery, typography, sound and setting into yet another way that producers can get their work funded, presented and distributed. A panel of artists and writers will discuss their experiences in the production, presentation and critiquing of this digital hybrid artform.

Moderator: Michael Masucci, artistic director, EZTV. Panelists include Kimberly Reed, technical editor, DV Magazine, and others TBA.

Machinima: The Making of a New Medium

(Friday, December 12, 12:30 P.M.-1:30 P.M) -- The panel will present Machinima, filmmaking within a realtime virtual 3D space (using 3D game technology). Machinima combines the real-time recording of filmmaking, the creative flexibilities of animation and the new technology of real-time 3D. Panel discussion will include both theory and production techniques as well as a Q&A session.

Presented by Paul Marino, executive director, Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences.

Producing Digital Hollywood

(Thursday, December 11, 2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M.) -- Presented by Filmmaker's Central School of Cinema, this intensive 2-hour breakout session focuses on producing high concept and high quality, short or feature projects with a practical "street smarts" and "old Hollywood" approach to the visually creative DV movie making process. This unique class will demystify and define the professional world of producing motion picture digital entertainment.

Hosted by Eric Galler, a Hollywood based feature film producer/director, screen credited on over 80 feature film, commercial, and video projects.

Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group Special Event

(Thursday, December 11, 5:30 P.M.-7:30 P.M.) -- The Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group (lafcpug) (www.lafcpug.org) and leaders from the FCPUG Network (www.fcpugnetwork.org) converge once again for their annual. This will be the largest gathering of FCP users and gurus on the planet during the month of December. The agenda will include Stump the Gurus, Final Cut Pro Tips and Tricks, demos of new products, show and tells, and raffle. A $5.00 donation will be respectfully requested at the door.
