Tony Uphoff, president of CMP's Business Technology Group (BTG), is leaving CMP and the technology market on February 1 to head up Beliefnet.com, a site focusing on religion, spirituality and morality, as president and CEO. John Russell, currently group president of the Channel Group, has been promoted to a corporate presidential post in which he will oversee the Channel and Business Technology groups, both of which have newly appointed presidents.

Taking on the leadership of the BTG as its new group president is Adam Marder, currently vice president and general manager of the group. Pam Watkins, senior vice president, business development of CMP, has been named president of the Channel Group, replacing Russell. Marder and Watkins will both report to Russell.

In his nearly two decades at CMP, Russell has held myriad management positions at CMP. As president of the Channel, he has overseen all print and non-print businesses and was instrumental in the formation of CIS, the Channel's research arm; the successful XChange conferences, and ChannelWeb. In addition, Russell is a recognized leader in the broader technology market, where he sits on a number of advisory boards and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and seminars, leading interpretive views on channel marketing and other industry issues.

Over the last two years, Marder has worked closely with Uphoff in refining the BTG's product portfolio, which includes InformationWeek, Network Computing, InternetWeek, and PC Expo. In addition, he currently manages the group's Customer First sales force, customer operations, customer-supplier relationships and brand business and operations. Before joining CMP's Business Technology Group, Marder served as vice president, corporate accounts, senior general manager of the former Personal Computing Group, senior general manager of the Channel Group, associate publisher of Electronic Buyers' News and general manager of the Technology Division. Prior to his tenure at CMP, he was controller of the Financial Times and held accounting positions at The First Boston Corp., Merrill Lynch and Arthur Andersen.

Watkins, who has held several corporate management positions, returns to the Channel, in which she has nearly a decade of experience, most recently as publishing director of the group. She also served as publisher of Computer Reseller News. Before joining CRN in 1988, Watkins spent four years in the telecommunications market with Telephony Magazine. She began her career in advertising, developing marketing programs for both consumer and technology products manufacturers.
