From the ubiquitous voice-mail systems to "free" long-distance via the Internet, voice over IP (VoIP) technologies have entered the mainstream. CMP Media today announced that Internet Telecom Expo 2000 will showcase the latest business applications using VoIP. A comprehensive conference and tutorial program and exhibitors representing some of the biggest players in the Internet telephony market will combine to provide attendees with the latest VoIP solutions. Internet Telecom Expo 2000 will be held September 19 - 21, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

"VoIP solutions bring organizations many benefits above and beyond free long distance," said Simon Cooper, Executive Director for Events in CMP's Converging Communications Group. "These new technologies are an integral part of the convergence of telecom, datacom and the Internet. Exhibitors at Internet Telecom Expo will showcase some of the latest solutions available in this space, and attendees will witness some of these products and services through demos, conferences, and tutorials."

Several conference sessions will present today's most innovative VoIP technology solutions. "IP Telephony: A Reality Check" will be presented on Tuesday by George Conant, President and CEO, Merlot Communications; Ed Wadbrook, Director of Strategy & Business Development, 3Com; and Scott Wharton, Vice President Marketing, Broadsoft. This session will be moderated by Paul Stockford, President, Saddletree Research Inc.

Two full-day, pre-conference tutorials will take place on Monday, September 18. Ray Horak, President, Context Corporation will lead the "Network Convergence Masterclass: Technologies and Protocols," while Mark Miller, President, DigiNet Corp presents "Voice, Fax and Video Over IP: The Converged Enterprise."

Several exhibitors at Internet Telecom Expo 2000 will be demonstrating their VoIP solutions. Net2Phone is a leading provider of voice-enhanced Internet communications services to individuals and businesses worldwide. At the show, Net2Phone will be demonstrating ClickTogether, an integrated e- commerce solution encompassing voice over IP with collaborative browsing. This adds live, human interaction to the online shopping experience. Net2Phone also will be showcasing the many ways that both consumers and businesses make telephone calls using IP telephony, including the new Panasonic 1800 series phone, which has a new button on it for Voice over IP calling using Net2Phone.

e-tel corporation offers the industry's first standards-compliant VoIP phones. e-tel's FreeRide family of Voice over IP phones, with patent-pending technology, allow carriers, service providers and OEMs to implement their own applications for enhanced features. FreeRide includes advanced features such as local and remote configuration, web and CTI device management interfaces, silence suppression, echo cancellation, fast start and multiple CODEC support.

Anatel Communications, an Analogic Company, designs, manufactures, and markets Voice over Internet Protocol DSP resource boards; T1/E1 and DS-3 network access cards; Media Gateway development systems; and associated software for the Internet Telecommunications market. Applications include VoIP gateways, Softswitch architectures, voice routers (PBXs) and call center systems. Anatel's TAP-806 DSP resource board, specified for 60 channels of G.723.1 and G.729 voice compression, is a cost-effective solution for building high-density VoIP systems. The 120-channels-per-slot, cPCI-based TAP-810 is ideal for PSTN-to-VoIP connectivity applications. Software Developer's Kits are available for a variety of platforms: Linux, Windows NT, Unixware and Solaris.

"Voice over IP has quickly moved from the realm of the hobbyist to become an important business solution," explained Cooper. "The largest carriers in the world have created Internet telecom divisions (through development and mergers), to take advantage of the many enhanced services they can offer their customers using this technology."

According to Gartner Group's Dataquest, the global 'Voice-over-Packet Services' market will grow to $87 Billion by 2004, and retail VoIP services are expected to boom from $443 million in 1999 to $19 billion in 2004.
