NEW YORK, Aug. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- VMware is a company well-known for its virtualization technology. However, what does the future of the company hold, how can it compete against the likes of Microsoft, and how does its strategy mesh with the needs of cloud computing and modern data centers?

In order to get answers to these and other questions, InformationWeek Editor-at-Large Charles Babcock sat down with VMware COO and President Carl Eschenbach to discuss these and other issues at the company's VMWorld conference.

At this year's show, VMware detailed several new initiatives that look to expand the company's portfolio, including partner announcements with Google and Docker, new enhancements to its NSX and VCloud Suite offerings, and a deal for an OpenStack distribution that starts next year.

In his interview, Babcock asked about the future and the competition, including Microsoft, how that is changing the virtualization market, and VMware's approach.

Eschenbach responded:

"We've moved way beyond virtualizing the server. Now we're focused on data center automation. We don't see Microsoft as a competitive threat. Our data center automation, our management and orchestration tools are world class and allow us to differentiate ourselves from Microsoft."
