GE Capital CIO Talks Insourcing, Agile With InformationWeek

NEW YORK, Aug. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the 1990s, GE led the charge when it came to outsourcing IT from the United States to countries such as India. Now, however, the company is changing one division at a time.

In fact, Jim Fowler, the newly appointed CIO of GE Capital, is working on reducing the division's IT outsourcing from about 80 percent now to 70 percent, bringing much of the work back in-house. Eventually, Fowler wants to get the mix down to an even 50-50.

The goal for GE Capital, Fowler said during a wide-ranging interview with InformationWeek editor Chris Murphy, is to bring more of the strategic knowledge back home. "We've outsourced some of our expertise, and we've given up some of the knowledge of how we run the business, how the place is wired, that we need to get back in-house," Fowler told Murphy.

During his interview, Fowler talked about many of the critical IT initiatives underway at both GE Capital, as well as the company as a whole. In addition to insourcing of IT, Fowler spoke about the company's push toward Agile software development under a program called FastWorks, which emphasizes smaller teams working on more specific projects.
